Hello everyone, I am the first to join the forum for the rebirth of Midgard2.

I look forward to playing the game again, and talking with many of the former players of the games past and new players too. So come and join the fun and sing out about who you are and what your Midgard past was.

My name is Penn Eckert and I played in Midgard USA under Zan E, and the two different Midgard UK’s versions under Andy M and Stephen W. I enjoined my time in all of them, and greatly look forward to play again under Jon Capps in Midgard2. I over my time have founded or brought to life three factions for players to play and enjoy within the game. They were the Cymru – People’s Defenders, The Seekers of Knowledge, and The Cult of the Dark One Religion. I look forward greatly to playing this game that I love with everyone again, and know under Jon’s GMing we will all have a awesome time at playing it again. I welcome everyone back to Midgard’s rebirth.

My name is David Oliver Kling, call me Oliver. I started playing Midgard when I was 16 back in 1986 and played until the game stopped running. My first character was “Toshiro Takekoshi” and I played in MercVerk when Cletus Graham was Senior #1 and Hal Mayne was Contract Coordinator (which I think was the Senior #4). Over the years I played as Roder #1, Banner #4, and right before the game ended I was the Blood and Fire #1 — to help keep the Blood and Fire running. I love Midgard and over the past twenty years have thought of it fondly. The idea of playing again is very exciting and I look forward to jumping back in — especially with the vision of Mardgard2. I wasn’t very excited about an “automated” version of Midgard. I want the real deal!

I very much agree with Oliver. I played in the Boda, SOA, Buccanears, Skelts, and the Cymru which I was the #1 or #2 pending on what time of the game we are looking at.

Hello, just got the email from Penn (thanks for that), so I came over to check it out. I’m sure I’ll play if it starts back up, I enjoyed all the years I played before. My best know clan was Rohim, the Getham #1 after Terry stepped down. I also played SOA, Banner (then Orthodox Banner) and Gift. There might be one or two I forgot, I was running 9 clans for a while and found a lot of factions interesting. Midgard had an extremely interesting player base, hopefully that could happen again.

It is good to see some familiar names and hopefully, we can get a few more familiar players to return. I fear that some players may not be around anymore and that makes me sad, but hopefully, we can introduce a new group of players to this wonderful gaming medium (PBM).

The other night I sent out a email to all of the seniors that had a email in the Cycle 79 Midgard report, in the hopes to letting former players know. I had (11) emails bounce and there were even a number of people that didn’t even have a listed email account. I would ask of everyone, if you know someone, please tell the about this rebirth and please invite them to come and check it out. Hopefully they will come and join us within the game too.

I briefly played Midgard UK in the early 1990s. I forget which company was running it at the time, I had it in my head it was Mitre Games but after doing a little bit of research they were running it in the 1980s and went bankrupt, so it was unlikely to be them. I seem to remember the GMs were called Neil and Brian.

      Greetings,
Some of you might remember me, Jorge Chacón. I played in Midgard USA, where I played Merk Verk (Clan Eridani Light Horse), SOA (various clans, but last one was Borja’s Band), Buccs (my first love and main faction for most of the time I played, with the last clans being Crashing Wave & Raging Storm), and Barbs (I played a clan with them for a while, but being a Bucc and a Barb at the same time was not good form).
At some point I was the Bucc #1, and it would be the faction of my choosing if I had to choose only one.
I do remember Penn, David, Steve & Jeff. I landed here because Brenda sent an email to MedievalInsprirations_Midgard@yahoogroups.com. My brother Rod, who at different times played both Imperial and Barb clans has passed, but he would have been very happy to see Midgard come back online.
      Cheers,
      Jorge

Thanks to Brenda for letting me know of the rebirth of Midgard. I played for 6 months or so back in the mid 80’s, but was spending a lot of time on BSE and Renaissance plus several beer and pretzel games and fell out. Cut my pbm teeth on Tribes of Crane by S&S. I did play in both UK versions as Imperials and Getham. I’m certainly interested.

Hi, my name is Stephen Weir, and I ran the UK version of Midgard for a few years. I played in the UK game as Karl Prie (Banner turned Imperial), Luxor the Moonprince (taken over from a player that left – Banner turned Cult of the Dark One) and Rutger Hauer (also taken over from a player that left – Cult of the Dark One Senior). I see many names that I recognise, and look forward to playing with you all. 🙂

Now if we could only write Private Messages to each other, it would be so nice. I already made that a request in the Enhancement Request for the forum to Jon.

Well this is a blast from the past. I played Midgard way back (seems like distant antiquity) but have missed game since it folded. It really was special and great to see it up and running again. I played Boda and Ring plans previously. Looking forward to resuming battle.

      Hi all, Richard Kleinbergs here.
Played Aust Midgard for it’s whole lifespan (only threw all the old paperwork away a couple of years ago)
My main clan was Digitus Impudicus, was Imperial leader and main clan was working it’s way through the Imperial homeland working on becoming Emperor when the game died.
Also a high-level Banner and a couple of others.

I’m Nick Rowe, I’ve played numerous PBM’s and PBEM’s over the years. I think I may have played Midgard very briefly, very many years ago, but I can’t be sure.

Currently back playing Monster Island as my only PBEM, and was how I got pointed in this direction. Best start reading the rules!

Hello, everyone. My name is Raven Zachary and I have been back to the play-by-mail gaming hobby since early 2018. I was an active player from around 1984 to 1993, during my middle school, high school and initial college years. The list of games I played during that time is long, and some of my recollection of which specific games I tried during those years has been lost. Currently, I help Charles Mosteller with the Suspense & Decision PBM magazine, co-admin the PlayByMail.net Facebook Group, and I am an active player in Middle-earth, SuperNova, Hyborian War, TribeNet, Atlantis: New Origins, and A New Dawn. This means most of my free time is focused on the PBM hobby.

I did not play Midgard, but I did meet whoever was GM’ing Midgard in 1986 at Gencon when I was 13. He passionately tried to get me to join back then, but the 13 year old me was interested in other games. I know Oliver (FutureSojourner) from by childhood when we both played Out Time Days, a fascinating play-by-mail time-travel RPG. I actually had forgotten about this, but when I listened to his podcast, his name was incredibly familiar to me, and he reminded me of our PBM phone calls back in the 1980s. Oliver has recruited me to Midgard, and I am excited to join you for the beta. I recently beta tested another PBM (Champions of Middle Earth) and have done all sorts of software testing in my career, so I will put these skills to use here.

      Talk to you all soon!

      Welcome Raven,

Glad you joined Raven. Played tribenet for several years back around 2007 forward until it was ended and Gattica was started. Dropped at that point and didn’t find out about the restart of the ‘older’ version until several years after. Didn’t get in unfortunately. Also wrote an article or two for Suspense and Decision for Grimfinger (when he had time to publish). Good to have a veteran old school pbmer on board.

Thought I’d have a look in to see what the relaunched game would look like, and the proposed pricing.

I played in both the Australian and US versions and had positions at one time or another in Sea Kings (Aus: Pirates), Roder, Getham, Gift, Society of Arms, Nippon (US: Manchuria), Barbarians, Banner and Boda. Over time and between version I remember being a senior in 3 factions.

At the time that Zan passed away I was down to only a few active positions and scheduled to leave the game a couple of turns later because of turn costs and the nature of the game as it was. I had enjoyed it for a number of years, but the game moved slowly, was very grindy, expensive when running a lot of positions and dealing with poor currency exchange rates, and the use of completely manual “special actions” to compensate for a lack of new game coding, new orders and new features, caused a lot of inconsistency, frustration and inefficiency.

Like a few ex-players I ended up designing my own PBeM that used Midgard as a starting point for concepts, but then developed in directions that left the final design bearing few if any similarities to Midgard. I never coded it because the gaming landscape had changed a lot and it seemed likely to be a money-sink, and frankly there were other things I wanted to do with my time.

From memory I cleaned out all my old Midgard stuff years ago when declutering the house and consolidating electronic backups.

      cheers,
      Nigel

        Serene Star (#3546) C79

And several others, some in pdf format.

Thanks Brian, your reply prompted me to look at an old laptop and old email archives, and I’ve found from late February 2005 (~4 years after Zan passed) via an email program I haven’t used in over a decade:
          – the email with PDF versions of the last returns for most (19) of the Midgard US positions I’d run towards the end of that game; and
          – a spirited discussion amongst a number of us from the US game with each other and Jon C. about “old chestnuts” with the Midgard game as it was at the time, and possible changes.

Kinda funny how it’s wound back to starting from an even earlier version and then being redeveloped a bit from there.

I’m wondering if Jon wants the city turns (where they are available) so he can reflect them in the restart, or whether the preference is to level the playing field by having all the cities in a much less developed state. As I recall, we managed to nuke a few cities off the map in Zan’s game…

          kind regards,
          Nigel

Hi Nigel – it is really amazing how many copies I have been provided of the various cities in the game – from several game companies! I have all of the original Delta Games stuff (as it came when we purchased and ran it from Time Space Simulations).
However, the old code is just that – old code. It travelled the world! I am allowing folks to resurrect their old clans after game start and one for the play test – of course, that was when I thought I would be lucky to get 10 players.
Now I will recreate positions after game start. However, do not be surprised if I adjust the position considerably.

We are still in play test mode – you can’t sign up for a turn as a player. I am handling that directly for the playtest so people don’t get charged, etc. I should be sending out a set of “starting” turns in the next couple of weeks.

I’m sorry to say this, but I was given a cd of the game files a loooong time ago….no combat mechanics. I’ve moved several times and I don’t have them anymore. To be honest there weren’t many useful things…played tribes of crane and midgard through…I think..mitre games

Should really say my name. Nick Haynes. Played ToC, Midgard, Hyborian War, the 3rd world war mitre game, several tiny games, aqua eternum, wrote a couple of them for friends, am part of the way into a tribal/political game, very large in scope, intending to somehow run it (no idea)…been involved in many bits in many places. I could field 30,000 warriors and a city in Tribes of Crane. That’s not bad, but really I’m just trying to get back in there since last involvement at 17 years old in 1988-1990

Hi, This is Jim Early, former clan Hal Mayne, former MercVerk Supreme Commander, MGUSA and MGUK, back until 2007 or so. While typing this I got back a response from Jon Capps, who is the one I needed to talk to. Anyway, not back in the game, but can’t seem to purge myself of this thing either.

      Hello Jim,

It is always a pleasure to hear from you. I hope that you consider returning to the game again.

When will a link be up for game sign up? If the launch hits its May 2021 target, that is. Gameplay materials would also be nice. I played for a short while in the 80’s. Imperial mostly. I think I had a Roder position, too. Sadly, I no longer have my game materials.

      Welcome

Gameplay materials ie updated manuals – are currently being finalised. They will generally get uploaded to the Downloads menu above once they are correct. New manuals will be available for startup, one for clans, one for cities, and one for seniors to make it all more digestable in stages.

GMs will be able to confirm official start date (we are still in playtest) but I heard about a month or so…. so not far off!

I STRONGLY recommend you join the Discord site, most of the chatter is happening via that portal. The link is in one of the threads here. Quite a few changes from the 80s version so need to get your head around the new mechanics for kingdoms, factions and sub factions! Some new and some familiar.

We have a mix of Aussies, Americans and Brits already on the Discord forum. Give a shout out and most of us will be happy to answer questions.

      Cheers mate

Greetings. I was recently pointed to this site from an old gaming friend who is looking for a way to play something now. From what I can see it appears that there are quite a few old players who are coming into this game.

Joining the site was easy but it seems that I can do nothing but look at forums. No rule book to look at to think about game mechanics?

This game is in playtest? When the game goes live…are the folks who have been playtesting going to be able to keep the positions they have built during the playtest?
